Steps Needed For Windshield Repair

If a windshield has a small chip on its surface, it can be repaired by completing the following project. As long as each step is completed properly, damage won’t be evident, and a repaired windshield will continue to provide a driver with visibility during the day or night.

Materials
magnifying glass
tweezers
glass cleaning agent
soft cloth
glass repair kit
finishing film
masking tape
plastic putty knife

Removing Shards Of Glass And Cleaning A Damaged Section

A magnifying glass can be used to help spot shards of glass that are stuck in a chipped area. A pair of tweezers will help an individual remove glass fragments in a safe manner. The exterior side of glass needs to be clean and dry before a chipped section is repaired. A few drops of a glass cleaning agent should be sprayed onto a soft cloth. A cloth should be moved gently over the glass so that a chipped area does not have too much pressure applied to it, which could result in a larger portion of glass that is damaged.

Repairing A Chipped Section

A Windshield repair can be made with a basic glass repair kit. In a kit, there will be several pieces that need to be attached. One of the main pieces has suction cups on the bottom of it. Suction cups need to be lined up evenly around a damaged portion of glass before they are secured to a windshield’s exterior. An applicator tube will connect to the piece that is secured to glass. Epoxy resin should be added to applicator. A plunger that is attached to the end of an applicator will apply pressure, which will help the resin adhere to chipped glass.

After tools are removed from a windshield, a piece of finishing film should be secured to a windshield’s exterior with a couple strips of masking tape. A plastic putty knife can be moved over film to flatten resin. Once resin dries, film can be removed from glass. As long as no sharp or heavy objects come into contact with a windshield, it will continue to remain intact.
